I got my Garmin nüvi 285W/285WT from Amazon a couple week ago. I've been using my iPhone for GPS function in the past. It is my first GPS. It is terrific and awesomely good for what it is for. The voice to speech is a great. Like the big screen as well. There is only one thing to say. It is value for the money. Beside, Amazon's service is great too. Fast transaction and quick delivery.

the unit works as advertised, but i was more interested in its applicability in my part of the world, the philippines. after checking a local forum, i was able to download a local map. its accuracy is not great, as the philippine maps are dependent 100% on contributions of the forum members; however, (and this is the great part), it is possible to revise your maps for your own personal use, or to contribute your corrections to the forum members so that everyone benefits. i'm currently in the process of recording my trips for the purpose of correcting them (street names, waypoints, one-way streets, subdivision gates, new roads, closed roads, etc.).
the bluetooth handsfree capability is also a welcome feature (one less gadget to fiddle around with while on the road).
all in all, i'm happy with my purchase (although i expect to be happier in the weeks to come).

I used this for the first time on my trip to Virginia. It was easy to figure out and I had fun trying different voices. For some unknown reason, the voice quit working. When I tired to choose a voice again, I read the message there were no voices available. I had to keep reading the instructions before I finally tried holding the button off for more than 8 seconds. It then allowed me to choose a voice again and I haven't had a problem since. I never did figure out a good reason to use the MSN stuff, so probably won't try again. My daughter has a 255W that she loves and this seems to work just as well. I would recommend this GPS to anyone, especially if the price stays at $99, which is half what my daughter paid a year ago for her 255W.

The wrong data gets typed in sometimes because of the closeness of the "keys". The GPS was a little slow to recognize the satellites. It boots up OK and shuts off fast, and once you locks in to your satellites, it is quite fast. It fits quite well in the pocket. However, we live in an age of convergence, so pretty soon, the GPS will be part of all phones, so when that happens, these devices will no longer be relevant unless they incorporate more features.
