Good GPS but not great August 30, 2010 J. Lin It has worked great for short distance travels throughout town. But it given me wrong turns and directions once going to Memphis, TN which is about a 2-hour drive. It's pretty fast finding where i am when I first turn it on. Accuracy is not great, but I wouldn't expect it to find the exact house everytime by typing in the address. Overall, it gets me to where I need to go and it's pretty reliable. It's better than the old GPS systems I had in the past and I would recommend it to anybody.
Good GPS August 25, 2010 Pedro Sanchez This Garmin GPS works really fine, it tis fast and accurate. The bad news is that it was discontinued by Garmin. This kind of things must be advertised by amazon or the seller in order to be able to make a better decision, before buying.
Garmin doesn't disappoint August 21, 2010 vantage Bought this to replace an older Garmin Nuvi 200 and am pleased with the reliability and performance. Compared to the older model, the lock on to satellites is almost instant.
Good GPS August 20, 2010 awgoodkitty (California) This was purchased to replace a 265T. Other than the wider screen and the MSN traffic cord, the 285WT is about the same. Luckily, I saved the lifetime traffic cord from my 265T which is supposed to work in this model, and will save me $100. A word about the MSN traffic feature - it's not worth it. The lifetime traffic worked better and faster. Neither are entirely reliable. I'm in the LA area and I have seen traffic alerts pop up when the road was clear, and I have been at a dead stop for several minutes with the traffic alert icon on green. The MSN features like weather, news updates, flight schedules really didn't add much to the experience. The gas prices feature would have been nice, but was either out of date with the prices or, on more than one occasion, the gas station had changed owners and companies and I drove in circles wondering why I couldn't see the station. My three month free subscription just expired and I will not be renewing. Just as well, MSN is phasing the service out in 2012. As a GPS, it works as well as other Garmin models - which is to say 95% of the time it is accurate. I've tried several brands - Magellan, Tom Tom and Garmin. Garmin wins hands down.
It get you where you want to go but... August 19, 2010 Riot (Portland) It seems to me that a GPS should be able to direct you anywhere you want to go in a decisive, quick and simple manner, this does not seem to be the case.
The Pros:
*Points of interest give you a good idea of whats around you and the categories are easy to navigate
*Screen is a good size and the displayed directions are easy to read
*Long charge cable can reach anywhere in the car from the cigarette lighter power source.\
The Cons:
*Gives estimated time and route based on distance and speed excluding all outside factors such as traffic signs and lights, thus often routing the driver through busy city streets as opposed to open highways.
*Poor response time for recalculations: often finishes recalculating as you pass the turn it recommends taking.
*Automatic zoom fluctuates as you approach your turn making it seem as if you are still at quite a distance, can be confusing often leading to missing your turn.
*While routing the driver through a busy city GPS often recommends, what I maintain is the most complex route directing the driver to made alternating turns left and right through busy 3 lane roads.
*After finding satellites and determining route will not redirect until you begin on the route set
*Initial route setting is often impossible to get to, directing the driver the opposite way the car is parked...even on a one way street.
*Doesn't account for new streets or reconfigured streets.
*Many streets maintain an old name or name they have never had before.
*MSN traffic advisory costs and will be discontinued Jan 1, 2012
*Frequently can't find intersections or manually entered points of interest.
Overall I've gotten where I wanted to go with this GPS even if it took pulling over and getting an exact address via phone but this particular model is no Gem there are some features I would never have considered that make using this device very convenient but overall I would recommend looking elsewhere for a GPS and avoiding this one.
