5 de 5 stele Works for me   August 16, 2010

I use this brush when I want to put on a thick coat of wax quickly, such as for a base layer. I also use it to embed somewhat thick items in the wax. I have never had a problem with bristles coming out. I singed a few hairs once with my heat gun, but made sure to keep the gun a little further away after that.

Let me start by saying that I quite like Enkaustikos as a vendor and brand. I've bought and continue to buy much of their product line. My suggestion is do not buy the slotted brushes. Avoid synthetic brushes and American style of paint brushes in general. My suggestion is to get natural "hake" brushes. Under the intense heat of the heat gun, the Enkaustikos brushes melt, often loose hairs, an bugger up work. I would say generally avoid synthetic brushes. In order to keep the wax flowing, constant heat is required from the top and bottom which requires keeping your pots on your heating plate, the painting surface on the heating plate if possible or depending on the size of the painting surface, a heating blanked with the heat turned up high, and finally then the wax on the brush must remain hot and liquid from pot to brush to panel. The wide hake brushes when warm enough (some are partially synthetic and should be avoided) will allow you to flow on the wax. Consider natural caligraphy brushes for doing line work. Enkaustikos are ingenious folks and tried to accomplish the same thing by nipping chunks out of brushes to allow wax to flow. Nah! Doesn't work. I bought and threw in a can quite a number until I discovered there were other choices. Contact me if you want a handful for free. There are lots of Enkaustikos products I quite like! And they are a favored vendor. But perhaps try one, you might find more luck than I. Rock on Enkaustikos! Bon wax!
